Preparing to apply
Most delays are caused by information arriving piece by piece. Having the basics together before you start is the cheapest thing you can do.

Why preparation changes the outcome
An assessment that stops and restarts every time a document is requested takes far longer than one that runs through. Where lender appetite changes, delay can matter on its own.
Preparation also changes the quality of advice you get. A specialist working from a complete picture can rule options in and out quickly, rather than discovering something halfway through that changes which lenders are relevant.
What is usually asked for
Requirements vary by lender and by facility, and asset-backed finance usually asks for less than a property facility. As a general starting point:
- ABN or ACN details, and how long the business has traded under them
- Recent business bank statements
- Basic financials, where the lender or facility requires them
- Details of existing finance and what is committed
- For equipment or vehicles, a quote or invoice from the supplier
- Identification for the directors
Be straight about credit issues
If there are defaults, arrears or recent dishonours, say so at the start. This is the single most common thing people hold back, and it works against them.
Credit issues are found during assessment without exception. Disclosed at the start, they shape which lenders are approached. Discovered later, they waste the time already spent and can look like something was being concealed.
Know what you are asking for and why
Be able to say what the funds are for, roughly what is needed, and where repayment comes from. That does not require a formal business plan, but it does require having thought it through.
A rough figure is fine at the start. Being clear about the purpose matters more than being precise about the amount.
Avoid applying in several places at once
Multiple applications lodged across several lenders in a short period is a pattern lenders look for, and it can work against you even when each application is reasonable on its own.
This is one of the practical arguments for going through a specialist. One conversation, then a considered approach to the lenders that actually fit, rather than a scattered set of applications leaving marks behind.
The short version
- Gather the basics before you start, not as they are requested
- Disclose credit issues at the outset; they surface anyway
- Be able to say what the funds do and how they will be repaid
- A rough figure is fine; clarity of purpose matters more
- Scattered applications across many lenders can count against you
This is general information, not advice. It does not take account of your objectives, financial situation or needs, and it is not financial, credit, tax or legal advice. Ur Business Finance is a matching service, not a lender. Whether finance is available, and on what terms, is decided by the lender.
